Phase out greyhound racing in Queensland now

The Petition of residents of the State of Queensland draws to the attention of the House the dangerous, deadly and wasteful greyhound racing industry. There is no way to make greyhound racing truly safe. It is time for Queensland to phase out the industry.

In 2025, 30 greyhounds were killed on Queensland tracks, with many more euthanised after sustaining racing injuries. Thousands of injuries occur on Queensland tracks every year.

The Q in Ipswich is one of the deadliest greyhound racing facilities in Australia. Since racing commenced in March 2025, 33 greyhounds have died after racing at this publicly-funded venue.

The industry faces a growing rehoming crisis, with more greyhounds bred than can be rehomed. Community-funded rescue groups often carry the burden of caring for and rehoming greyhounds. Queensland remains the only state where the industry’s Greyhound Adoption Program is fully funded by taxpayers.

Greyhound racing relies on substantial public funding, while gambling companies are among the primary financial beneficiaries. Polling indicates most Queenslanders oppose greyhound racing and the use of public money to support greyhound racing.

New Zealand will end greyhound racing from 31 July 2026. Tasmania is legislating a phase-out. The ACT has already banned the industry. Australia is now one of the few countries where greyhound racing continues.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to phase out greyhound racing in Queensland, implement a transition plan to safely rehome all greyhounds, and provide support for workers affected by the closure of the industry.
