MSC: don’t greenlight industrial krill fishing
Emperor penguins and Antarctic fur seals have just been added to the IUCN’s red list of endangered species. But industrial fishing vessels are still plundering the ocean for vast quantities of the krill they rely on for food.
Now the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is considering certifying the world's biggest krill fishing company, Aker QRILL, as “sustainable”. If they do, it would send a dangerous signal that the Antarctic is there to be exploited, no matter the cost to the region’s precious wildlife.
The MSC hasn’t made its final decision yet – and it depends entirely on public trust in its label. A public outcry could push them to reconsider and help save an ecosystem on the brink. Let’s join the campaign to ensure the MSC refuse to certify industrial krill fishing.
